Warm greetings from MISA.
End of the School Year
We would like to start with some important news, which is that online lessons will end on March 31. That means there are now just over three weeks of classes to go, after which everyone will receive their end of year report cards. We will then conduct Progression Tests in early April. Support will also be provided during April and May for those students who need it.
Cambridge Exams
Progression Tests will take place online and schedules will be provided. These are internally assessed and give us valuable data on student progress. We will work with this data during the coming school year, and provide extra support where necessary, to make sure all students are on track in the Cambridge Pathway.
IGCSEs will be conducted in-house, and evidence will be sent to Cambridge so that a fair score can be assigned to each student for every subject they have chosen.
Checkpoints will not take place this year.
Helping Students
Attendance at live sessions has significantly improved. Some parents are happy that we are continuing these lessons, and we agree that they should be made available. Others express their frustration that they cannot connect to Google Meet. For that reason, we have asked teachers to provide all learning materials, instructions, lesson slides and recordings for students to access in their own time.
All absences will be excused, and we will not be disappointed if students do not complete assignments. We do not wish to place undue pressure on them at this time but we want them continue learning. According pedagogical research, it is better for children to have a normal routine during times of crisis, while halting their education is the worst possible thing to do. If it is too difficult for them do their assignments or join classes, we understand, but please keep on trying your best, and our teachers will do the same.
Let them express their feelings as they live through an important moment in history. For instance, they can keep a written or a video diary. This will give them something valuable to look back on in a few years, and help them deal with negative feelings, as they may become scared or insecure hear when they overhear bad things being spoken about.
You can also reassure students that they are safe and have a bright future. Focus on success, and on completing IGCSEs and A-levels, so that they can go to the best universities in the world. With a good education they can then help this country move forward peacefully.
Further Support
We will continue to assist our students in various ways over the summer months, as many of our teachers will remain in Mandalay during April and May, to help them catch up or retain their numeracy and literacy skills.
One of those ways is our Read-a-Thon. Prizes and certificates will be made available throughout 2021 in order to encourage all students to read.
In addition, we can provide free Mathematics and English tuition and online modules for any students who require them.
IGCSE students will also continue to receive preparation for their exams.
Next School Year
The next school year will begin a little later than usual, on June 28, 2021. We do not foresee any great changes in the faculty, and most teachers are already contracted for a further year, meaning we can continue the Cambridge programme smoothly and without further interruptions. School fees will not be increased for any age groups, and enrolment is open, with discounts during March and April. Please contact our school office for more info.
Last but not least, I would like to personally express my gratitude to all parents for your support over the last nine months. It has been an incredible effort from your side, and we cannot put into words how much we admire your perseverance and dedication for the sake of your children.
It has been a remarkable and turbulent year, and we can take some positives from the double-edged crisis that has befallen us. Students have learnt new skills that will serve them well in their future lives. They have experienced what it is like to work with computers and to be more independent and resilient. We have solved problems together through engagement, innovation, and responsibility, which are three of the central Cambridge learner attributes. I feel that this experience has made all of us stronger, and ready for anything that the future brings.
That is why we should not be downhearted. Instead, we should look to the future, our children, and do our part to help Myanmar by helping them. In time, we will return to some kind of normality and continue on our path.
It is important that the MISA community stays together, for the school to continue functioning and for students to receive an international education. The school relies on you, and we must continue our mission to provide quality education to Myanmar people.
