Parent Letter (October)

Dear parents,

First of all, we would like to thank you all for your loyalty and patience during this crisis.

This is a difficult period not just for us, but for all schools and businesses around the world, and online learning is our only choice to keep our students learning safely in this climate.

We do not see taking a break as an option, because this will set learners back in their education and could affect them negatively in the long run. Students missing half a year, or even a full year of school, will not only miss out on new content, but will forget what they have already learnt and regress by one or more years in terms of their development.

Of course, online learning has its ups and downs, and we have collected a wealth of data from students and parents that will be used to improve our services even more. We are thankful to everyone who answered our survey and gave their valuable opinions.

We are happy that feedback has been mostly positive, with students and parents recognizing that this is the best alternative in our current situation. Many have also expressed that they enjoy this form of instruction and are gaining new abilities, especially independent learning and computer-related skills. This method also opens up new avenues of communication between the teacher and the student’s home, and we hope that parents are now more in touch with their children’s education than they were before.

We all miss the social interaction of a normal school day, and we realise that more is demanded of guardians in this scenario, especially those parents of younger learners. Screen time is also an overriding issue, and we will take all of your concerns into account, as well as those of students and teachers, when we review and amend our timetable at the end of the current semester, while ensuring that the full curriculum is covered by the end of the school year.

This last point is important, as we need to guarantee to our learners that this year will be counted on record as a fully completed Cambridge Assessment International Education academic school year. As an official Cambridge school and exam centre, our students will be eligible to take standardised Progression Tests, Checkpoint Tests and IGCSE exams on campus, and thus progress to the next level on the Cambridge pathway.

In terms of services, we have added some classes to the timetable, as an extra opportunity to learn. This includes a study hour for primary students, in which they can go over their tasks and assignments with Assistant Teachers and thus lighten some of the parents’ burden. Also, Assistant Teachers are now present in all secondary classrooms. Finally, a counselling service is also available for students, in which they can call and speak to our certified counsellor, Tr Helen, in case they are having problems.

Our current discount policy will continue for as long as the online learning period does. Since we do not know how long this will last, it will be calculated once face-to-face classes return, and then deducted from the following year’s school fees.

In other news, we have recently renovated the campus. Aside from general renovation and painting, many social distancing, hygiene and safety-related measures have been implemented. We have also installed new cabling to ensure a smoother internet connection is ready to be used whenever we get the green light from government authorities to resume physical classes. When that does happen, it is anticipated that we will continue to use our online tools in a blended learning format. In any event, we are fully ready to restart face-to-face classes whenever it is permitted.

Overall, we will keep on making changes where necessary, taking all of your valued opinions into account.
